The Pro Football Hall of Fame is soon set to announce which of the 128 Modern-Era Hall of Fame nominees will make it one step closer to enshrinement in 2026. Detroit Lions legendary tackle Lomas Brown is making a pitch to be included.
Brown, who is also the Lions' radio color analyst, appeared on NFL Network's Good Morning Football on Wednesday to present his argument:
Well, you know us big fellas, you know, they call us the 'faceless five.' So the only time you call out a lineman, pretty much, if he does something wrong. And so I think it takes (the Pro Football Hall of Fame voters) a while to kind of warm up to us guys, but, you know, hopefully, the voters will see that it was a great guy. #20 (running back Barry Sanders) running behind me, and he had to have a little help to get all that yardage that he got. So, hopefully, they'll come around and see that we were intricate in helping Barry to get to where he got at while he was playing in the NFL.

Brown's résumé is an impressive one. As Good Morning Football's Kyle Brant mentioned in the interview, Brown has played more games than anyone at the offensive tackle position, with 263 games. To put that into context, current Lions OT Penei Sewell has only played in 73 games in his own potential Hall of Fame career, which is only 27.76% of the way to Brown's total.
Brown was selected to seven consecutive Pro Bowls at the position. Along the way, he was also selected to First-Team All-Pro once and Second-Team All-Pro four times. Brown entered the Lions' Pride of the Lions in 2023. Of the 22 members of the Lions' ring of honor, Brown is one of six not in the Hall of Fame, including recent inductee defensive end Robert Porcher.
Brown is joined by other Lions legends, wide receiver Herman Moore and kicker Jason Hanson, among the nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Screening Committee is in the process of whittling down the 128 nominees to 50 and will announce its results before the end of October. Afterward, the Screening Committee will further reduce the list to 25 semifinalists before locking in 15 finalists. The 2026 Hall of Fame class will then be decided before Super Bowl LX.
The Lions' Monday Night Football game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers holds extra meaning for Brown. Brown played his final NFL season with the Buccaneers, playing in 11 games, none of them starts.
Luckily for Brown, that lone season with the Buccaneers was in 2002, when the franchise won its first Super Bowl. Brown was not a starter on that Super Bowl XXXVII-winning team, but did see playing time throughout the playoffs.
While Brown contributed to the Buccaneers' first Super Bowl, he also contributed to much of their fanbase's misery throughout the late 1980s and the 1990s. Sanders is well-known for his rushing prowess against just about any franchise, but it was the Buccaneers in particular that he bullied the most. In his 19 games against the Buccaneers, Sanders rushed for 2,195 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns -- both the most against a single opponent. Much of that was Sanders' one-in-a-lifetime talent, but Lions' fans know well that a good run game needs a good OL.
Brown's enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026 is not a certainty, especially in what could be a loaded class. This year's first-time eligible class includes impressive names, such as quarterback Drew Brees, WR Larry Fitzgerald, and tight end Jason Witten. Add in others waiting for their name to be called, and it might be tough to find room in a maximum eight-player class for someone who has yet to reach the semifinalist round.
That being said, the Lions are putting in an extensive campaign to bring light to Brown's greatness at his position. That added attention may be just what Brown needs to get the ball rolling on his deserved enshrinement, even if it may take a little while longer.
