Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell is reportedly serious about holding a legitimate competition for the team's starting quarterback job involving free-agency signing Kyler Murray and 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy that could run through at least a portion of the preseason.
However, those who view Murray as the favorite to emerge as Minnesota's Week 1 QB1 feel that he should thrive while working with an advertised offensive guru such as O’Connell and with star wide receiver Justin Jefferson. During a recent appearance on the FanDuel TV "Up & Adams" program, retired quarterback and Hall of Famer Warren Moon voiced somewhat of a warning for Murray regarding the 28-year-old's future.
"I don’t think he has any excuses with this Minnesota team," Moon said about Murray, per Chris Franklin of NJ Advance Media. "This team is ready to go on the defensive side of the ball, offensively with the weapons. Now it’s just a matter of having a trigger guy. And which trigger guy is it going to be? Is it going to be Kyler or is it going to be J.J.??"
While O’Connell may not yet be ready to fully give up on McCarthy, the Vikings' interest in Murray showed that the coach understood he couldn't simply keep McCarthy atop the depth chart after the 23-year-old largely failed to impress across the first 10 regular-season starts of his career.
That said, concerns about Murray's work ethic routinely arose when he was with the Arizona Cardinals from 2019 through the 2025 season. Back in February of this year, former NFL executive and current analyst Louis Riddick openly questioned Murray's "commitment" and "leadership."
"He never looks like he’s motivated," Moon added about Murray. "Maybe he is inside, but he just doesn’t … I hope he’s learned over the last couple of years with all the criticism that he’s taken, with the injuries that he’s gone through. I have to give more of myself to my football team. I have to show people more about what I’m feeling and thinking. You have to do that as a quarterback in order to get people to follow you."
Murray made just five starts during the 2025 season before he was shut down due to a foot issue. Even if he truly is more motivated to silence critics than ever before, the possibility exists that his body could betray him at any point this coming fall.
