The Houston Texans have the statistical edge heading into Sunday’s matchup with the Tennessee Titans. Both teams are 0-4, but C.J. Stroud has produced more through the air than rookie quarterback Cam Ward, and Houston’s defense has recorded more sacks. Still, the Texans cannot afford to take Tennessee lightly.
The Titans have a disruptive defensive tackle in Jeffery Simmons, a young receiver coming off a breakout performance, and a chance to take advantage if Houston repeats its late-game mistakes.
The game kicks off at 1 p.m. ET Sunday, at Nissan Stadium in Nashville. Houston needs its first win, but these three concerns could make the divisional matchup much tougher than the records suggest.
Simmons has been a force in the middle and one of Tennessee’s biggest defensive threats. The Titans defensive tackle has recorded 24 tackles, two sacks and two passes defended this season. He also has 12 quarterback pressures, according to Pro Football Focus, and has been effective against the run as well as the pass.
Simmons was particularly active against Baltimore in Week 4, helping Tennessee keep the game competitive in a 24-18 loss. Houston’s protection must hold up
Stroud has already been sacked 12 times through four games, leaving Houston’s offensive line with a clear challenge. The Texans’ interior offensive linemen must communicate well on double-teams and avoid allowing Simmons a free path into the backfield.
Carnell Tate has emerged as a bright spot in Tennessee’s struggling offense. The rookie wide receiver caught nine passes for 145 yards against Baltimore in Week 4, giving Cam Ward a reliable target in a game the Titans eventually lost 24-18. Tate now has 22 receptions for 268 yards through four games.
The Texans have allowed too many big plays this season, so keeping Tate in front of the coverage and limiting his yards after the catch will be important. Houston also needs to prevent Ward from building an early rhythm with the rookie.
However, there has been a new concern for Tennessee; Tate was limited at Thursday’s practice with a back injury, after practicing without limitations Wednesday. The injury makes his availability for Sunday’s game uncertain.
Houston’s loss to Dallas was not simply a defensive failure. The Texans led 30-27 with 2:23 remaining, but the Cowboys drove down the field and scored the winning touchdown with 40 seconds left. The decision to preserve time was a calculated one, but the defense still had to make a stop. It did not.
Houston has enough offensive talent to compete, but it cannot keep asking Stroud to rescue games after the defense gives away late leads. As a result, DeMeco Ryans is taking over defensive play-calling.
The Texans’ head coach is taking back duties from coordinator Matt Burke. The Texans head coach announced the change Wednesday, stating he wanted to improve communication and give the defense a spark after the team’s 0-4 start.
