With the Minnesota Vikings in need of a new quarterback, they swung for the fences and landed quarterback Kyler Murray. With the Vikings looking to compete with the trio of passers in the NFC North, they will need an improved version of the former Arizona Cardinal. Minnesota is expected to improve, but it will not be easy.

How can Murray improve in 2026 with the Vikings?

How Can Kyler Murray Elevate the Vikings Offense?

Mastering Under-Center Foundation

The first thing he must do is master the under-center foundation. During his time with the Cardinals, Murray operated under the shotgun formation on 90% of the snaps. This is going to change in Minnesota.

Murray is going to have to improve on his footwork. Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell is using the Sean McVay offensive scheme that has worked for many different offenses. Like most of his offenses, they perform an increasing amount of under-center formations that transition into roll-outs and bootlegs.

Murray must be comfortable with three to seven-foot dropbacks and learn to have his back facing opposing defenses. The reward will be unleashing the Vikings and their devastating crossing routes and free receiver Justin Jefferson down the field.

Utilizing  Vikings Weapons

Secondly, Murray has the best receiving duos in the NFL: Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson. The veteran quarterback has a tremendous deep-ball that is a weapon if used efficiently. Jefferson also has an amazing tendency to make amazing plays down the field.

Kyler Murray has the opportunity to let his playmakers do a majority of the work. By doing so, the Vikings can accumulate significant yards after the catch (YAC) for all of its playmakers. This can also reduce the stress and trauma that Murray puts on his body.

Discipline Scrambling

Another thing Murray can do is discipline himself when it comes to scrambling. He must be able to limit the amount of ‘hero-ball’ plays that got him in trouble in Arizona.

The Vikings offensive line is more stable than what he had with the Cardinals. Murray needs to trust the pocket. O’Connell’s system will allow more time for the line to set up and give the quarterback enough time to get the ball out.

His scrambling must be efficient and not be used to survive. This is specifically on bootlegs, quarterback draws, and designed rollouts, which are staples in Minnesota. It is possible for the Vikings to utilize the legs of Murray, which can play to his strength.

Provide Veteran Leadership

J.J. McCarthy will also be a part of the crowded quarterback room. Lastly, Murray will be able to provide veteran leadership and a voice in the locker room. He will have the opportunity to elevate his game by performing at a high-level and serving as a bridge. By combining his natural athleticism and arm, he can become a top quarterback in the NFC North.

Kyler Murray has a better situation for him as he heads to the Vikings. With valuable playmakers and a great offensive system, the Vikings are expected to make some noise in a loaded division.
