How Eagles' Saquon Barkley can top historic 2024 season

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley's 2024 season was the stuff of legends: 2,005 rushing yards, 125.3 per game and the AP Offensive Player of the Year Award.

Yet after a steady 84 scrimmage yards, highlighted by a 10-yard touchdown in the Eagles’ 24-20 win over the Dallas Cowboys, the conversation isn’t about regression. It’s about how Barkley and the team around him could make 2025 even better.

And that’s where the intrigue begins. Let’s break down the ingredients in place for 2025 for Barkley to surpass last year’s incredible season.

Eagles have elite stability on the offensive line

Barkley runs behind one of the NFL’s premier offensive lines. Center Cam Jurgens, signed to a four-year, $68 million extension through 2029, anchors the middle with Pro Bowl pedigree.

Bookend tackles Jordan Mailata (left tackle) and Lane Johnson (right tackle) form a dominant duo, while left guard Landon Dickerson adds power inside. At right guard, Tyler Steen is stepping into a bigger role.

With this blend of experience and upside, Philadelphia’s line positions Barkley for another monster season in 2025.

New OC Kevin Patullo brings a smarter scheme

New offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo, promoted in February after serving as passing game coordinator, is reshaping the Eagles’ attack to complement Barkley’s strengths.

Expect more quick-passing concepts, RPOs and revived screens, along with creative looks from the pistol and gap-scheme runs. These wrinkles force defenses to respect the passing game while opening lanes for Barkley, reducing the stacked boxes he often faced last year.

The result: a more balanced offense that could make Barkley even more dangerous, even if his raw rushing totals look different.

Saquon Barkley can be more efficient in key situations

In 2024, Barkley was tackled at the one-yard line a league-high 11 times, and never scored on those drives. Seven turned into quarterback Jalen Hurts rushing touchdowns, one into a Hurts pass and one ended in a field goal.

Those stops cost Barkley several scores, meaning he could have easily topped 15 total touchdowns (he finished with 13 rushing and two receiving). Sharper short-yardage execution could unlock that ceiling in 2025.

Managing Barkley's workload management with depth

The Eagles know Barkley doesn’t need 30 touches every week to dominate. After pushing close to 3,000 rushing yards, including playoffs in 2024, the Eagles know Barkley’s touches must be managed.

Sophomore running back Will Shipley brings versatility, while veteran back AJ Dillon adds short-yardage power. That depth lets Philadelphia keep Barkley fresh across the season, preserving his explosiveness for late-game and postseason moments.

Eagles' supporting cast has synergy

With Jalen HurtsA.J. Brown, and DeVonta Smith  stretching defenses, Barkley rarely sees stacked boxes. The balance of Philadelphia’s offense gives him room to thrive, a luxury he didn’t always have with the New York Giants

Remember when New York Giants owner John Mara said, “I’d have a tough time sleeping if Saquon goes to Philadelphia, I’ll tell you that.”

The Giants gambled on letting Barkley test the market, and the Eagles turned that decision into a franchise-altering Super Bowl win.

Surrounded by one of the league’s deepest rosters, Barkley is looking to build on yet another legendary season. And, every Eagles fan is here for it!
