Howie Roseman attempted to pull off trade of the century for 4-time Pro Bowler

Imagine a world where the Philadelphia Eagles would actually find a way to convince the Dallas Cowboys to trade them Micah Parsons. It may have happened as early as the summer before the Green Bay Packers made the trade happen last week.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported Thursday morning that Eagles general manager Howie Roseman made a call to the Cowboys to see if they could acquire Parsons in a trade. It turns out this might have been a pipe dream for Philly.

"The Eagles called the Cowboys to see if they could acquire Parsons and bring him back to Pennsylvania. But the Cowboys had no interest in trading Parsons in the division, especially to the defending Super-Bowl champion Eagles, whom they open with tonight."

What would Roseman have had to offer the Cowboys to make a deal happen with Parsons?

Let's face it, Parsons is a four-time Pro Bowler who has had double-digit sack seasons in each of his first four years. He's a once-in-a-generation pass rusher who has the potential to be a Hall of Famer. Would Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones really make that trade to the Eagles?

A deal like that would have to be too good to be true. The Eagles would have had to give up at least three first-round picks and throw in a couple of players. Since Jones wants to stop the run, defensive tackle Jordan Davis would have made a ton of sense, and adding Parsons' replacement, either Nolan Smith Jr. or Jalyx Hunt, would have also helped.

Philly would have to ask the question as to whether it would have been worth it to mortgage the future of the franchise away for Parsons. His talent level is insane, but the cap hit it would have had on the Eagles would have been devastating for the team's future.

The Eagles could forget about re-signing players like Jalen Carter or Reed Blankenship to the team. They would have to go cheap in free agency with average veterans replacing them.

Parsons is one of the best players in the NFL, but $47 million a year is not worth it when the Eagles have proven they can win a Super Bowl without him. Roseman might have dodged a bullet without even knowing it.
