The Liam Coen era in Jacksonville started off with a W. The Jaguars rolled past the Carolina Panthers 26–10 at EverBank Stadium, despite a weather delay midway through the second quarter due to lightning. The victory even inspired owner Shad Khan to give Coen a game ball in the locker room afterward.
Still, while the win looked decisive on paper, it felt like a tale of two halves. Jacksonville scored 20 points in the first half but managed only six after halftime, raising questions about the team’s killer instinct and ability to put games away once they’re in control.
Running back Travis Etienne Jr. led the charge with 143 rushing yards, including a highlight-reel 71-yard sprint that set up a touchdown.
Trevor Lawrence, however, looked like the same “average at best” quarterback fans in Duval have come to know. He flashed elite talent at times—such as a pinpoint throw to Brenton Strange—but just as often sailed passes or missed wide-open targets. That inconsistency continues to be a concern; Sunday was more of the same old Trevor, leaving lingering questions about whether he can take the next step this season.
It was also a surprisingly quiet day for second-year wideout Brian Thomas Jr., who caught just one pass for 11 yards. Still, he contributed by taking an end-around into the end zone for a touchdown, showing that Coen can find creative ways to involve his playmakers even when the passing game isn’t clicking.
Linebacker Foye Oluokun was a force, tallying 10 tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception that directly led to points. Jacksonville’s secondary played aggressively, keeping Bryce Young uncomfortable throughout the day.
The main concern, however, was the lack of a consistent pass rush. While Josh Hines-Allen generated eight pressures, the Jaguars recorded only one sack, and Young repeatedly escaped pressure for first-down scrambles. The front four will need to finish plays more consistently against stronger offensive lines to truly compete in the AFC.
Rookie Travis Hunter made a splash in his debut, showing up with a new haircut, ditching his trademark braids, and immediately bringing energy and swagger that have been missing in Jacksonville. He caught six passes for 33 yards and played some snaps at cornerback, demonstrating his two-way potential and instantly elevating the team’s attitude on the field.
Carolina never recovered. Bryce Young finished 18 of 35 for 154 yards, with two interceptions and a fumble, while key injuries—including Turk Wharton and Pat Jones—compounded their struggles.
Jacksonville delivered a statement win with explosive plays on offense, takeaways on defense, and a strong debut for Coen. But the quiet second half, Lawrence’s inconsistency, and a pass rush that struggled to finish leave lingering questions. If the Jaguars hope to contend in the AFC, those issues must be addressed quickly.
