'I Think That’s Worth A Lot More;' Green Bay Packers Star Explains Presence at OTA’s Despite Contract Uncertainty

The Green Bay Packers, like every other NFL team, are in the midst of the organized team activities (OTA’s) this week. And like many teams, they have some players that are not present (though it is important to keep in mind that these current practices are optional). Quay Walker is not in attendance as he awaits a contract extension after the Packers decline to pick up his fifth year option.

Also not present at OTA’s are two-time Pro Bowlers Jaire Alexander and Elgton Jenkins. Alexander, as fans are well-aware, was the subject of trade rumors for the majority of the offseason. However, it seems like he and the Packers are working towards a reunion. Regardless of whether or not the two sides come to an agreement by next week, the star cornerback plans to report for mandatory mini camp.

Jenkins is moving from left guard to center after the departure of Josh Myers in free agency. He is not attending OTAs because he wants more guarantees in his current deal as centers do not make as much money as guards on the open market. He is concerned that his position switch will affect his future earnings.

Green Bay Packers Right Tackle Zach Tom Is in Attendance Despite Extension Eligibility

While the three aforementioned players are not in attendance due to the their ongoing contract negotiations, one other Packers star player is present even though he is currently waiting on an extension.

Zach Tom, who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, is entering the final year of his rookie contract. Widely regarded as one of the best right tackles in the game, there is little question that when (not if) he gets his new contract offer from Green Bay, it will make him one of the highest paid players at his position in the NFL.

It is not unusual for such players to holdout of team activities until such deals are done, but Tom has shown up to every practice so far this offseason.

On Tuesday, he explained why.

“I don’t really think it’ll do me any good to sit out,” Tom said Tuesday (via The Athletic). “I’m trying not to worry about the contract situation. I’m just trying to do what’s best for the team. And being here with the guys, I think that’s worth a lot more … the contract situation will take care of itself. So I’m just here working and grinding with the guys. If I wasn’t here, I’d probably be somewhere just not doing anything.

“I want to be here, obviously.”

He also said he is not worried about whether or not the contract will get done before the season begins. “I’ll just let that take care of itself,” Tom said.

As mentioned, it is a matter of when, not if, the Packers extend Tom. His flexibility on the timetable allows them to focus on the deals of the players currently not in attendance.
