Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is making his way back from shoulder surgery, so, naturally, there is some skepticism surrounding him heading into next season.
However, he is apparently looking pretty good.
Josh Bode of WISH News 8 has reported that Richardson has been “slinging the ball all over the field,” and Colts tackle Bernhard Raimann is also impressed with how the youngster has looked.
“He looks phenomenal, from what I can tell,” Raimann said, via Bode. “I don’t know much about quarterback play, but he completes his passes and he runs fast, so that’s good.”
Raimann added that he has been very stirred by Richardson’s work ethic.
“He was always working, Raimann said. “Even last year, he never lost touch with the guys. He was in here. He was working. He was in the training room. He did everything he could to get back.”
Can Anthony Richardson Realize His Potential?
Richardson, who played his collegiate football at the University of Florida, was selected by Indianapolis with the fourth overall pick of the NFL Draft last spring.
He won the starting quarterback job over Gardner Minshew right out of camp, but injuries completely derailed his rookie campaign.
In Week 2, Richardson sustained a concussion that sidelined him for Week 3. Then, in Week 5, Richardson suffered a shoulder injury that knocked him out for the remainder of the season.
During his short time on the field, the 22-year-old threw for 577 yards, three touchdowns and an interception while completing 59.5 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 87.3. He added 136 yards and four scores as a rusher.
There is no doubting Richardson’s talent, but will he be able to put it all together to forge a successful NFL career?
Some wonder about Richardson’s reckless play style and whether or not it will lead to more injuries as he moves forward. He stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 245 pounds, so he may feel he can absorb contact more than most quarterbacks, but those hits add up, and we already saw what can happen when you try to get too aggressive in the run game as a quarterback this past year.
Richardson has insisted that he will not be changing the way he plays the game, but hopefully, he minimizes his risk by doing things like sliding more, running out of bounds, etc. Basically, he needs to avoid taking unnecessary hits that can either injure him on the spot or can end up having a cumulative effect later on.
We’ll see what Anthony Richardson has in store for all of us in 2024.
