The Indianapolis Colts have announced that Daniel Jones will start Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins. This comes after a long battle between Jones and third-year Quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. This decision may come as a surprise to many Colts fans. Many were hoping that AR had shown enough growth to take on the starting role. Let’s dive into what led to this decision and whether it will be the right choice.

Colts QB 1

The Colts have now announced their starter. It is, in fact, Jones. This comes as a shock to me, as I felt Richardson had shown the growth and improvement in areas of his game that needed it. The short and intermediate throws have looked great, and his footwork is much less muddled.

In two preseason games, Jones has put up a stat line of 17-of-32 with 245 yards, and Richardson went 8-of-14 for 94 yards. I believe what broke the camel’s back was the missed pass protection in Week 1 when Richardson broke his pinky. Those are things that AR should not be missing in year three. I will say that AR has worked on all his mechanics, but he still has trouble with reading a defense and checking the ball down.

I don’t believe that the Colts are done with AR by any means, but his being injury-prone has hurt his growth. It will be interesting to see how long a leash Jones will have. If Jones is not getting the job done, I could see Richardson getting the nod before October if he can get the small stuff right.
