The Green Bay Packers signed offensive tackle Zach Tom to a monster four-year, $92 million contract extension on Monday, a long-awaited move that should provide quarterback Jordan Love with great blindside protection for the foreseeable future.
But the Packers also have another offensive lineman waiting for a new deal: center Elgton Jenkins.
Jenkins has just two years remaining on his contract and has been a fixture in the trenches for Green Bay since entering the NFL in 2019. He has played all over the line, mostly featuring at guard but also moonlighting at tackle. This coming season, Jenkins will be moving to center to accommodate free-agent signing Aaron Banks, and apparently, Green Bay is a bit iffy on it.
How do we know that? Well, ESPN’s Rob Demovsky has reported that Tom’s new contract does not impact Jenkins’ situation and that the Packers would prefer to wait to see how the 29-year-old fares at his new position before making any rash decisions.
It’s certainly an understandable strategy by Green Bay, which also gave a massive sum of money to Banks in free agency and surely does not want to oversaturate dollars up front.
Jenkins, a former second-round pick, is a two-time Pro Bowler and started all 17 games in 2024, marking the first time the Mississippi State product played in every contest since 2020.
The Packers’ offensive line is definitely one of the best in football, but it will certainly be interesting to see how handles Jenkins handles the move to center in the fall.
