Insider shares promising injury update on Giants' Daniel Jones

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll raised eyebrows throughout the NFL community when he declined to confirm on Friday that quarterback Daniel Jones will be able to return from a lingering neck injury this season.

It seems the Giants aren't preparing to shut Jones down quite yet.

"Sources tell CBS Sports that Jones is expected back at some point this year, and the team continues to wait on the medical staff to clear Jones for contact," CBS NFL insider Jonathan Jones explained for a piece published late Friday afternoon.

Jones hasn't been cleared for contact since suffering the injury during the team's Week 5 game at the Miami Dolphins on Oct. 8. He has repeatedly insisted he is dealing with a different type of setback than what caused him to miss the final six contests of the 2021 season and Daboll said last week that the 26-year-old's 2023 campaign was "not over."

However, Daboll somewhat danced around the matter on Friday after he announced that Jones wouldn't play for the 2-5 Giants against the 3-3 New York Jets this Sunday.

"Again, I just go with the information that I get and today he was out, he’s getting better and we’ll see where he is next week," Daboll said about his QB1 while speaking with reporters, as shared by SNY. Daboll added he doesn't "have a crystal ball with injuries."

Meanwhile, Jones mentioned that a source told him the Giants would have put Jones "on injured reserve by now" if they "thought this were a long-term issue."

Backup Tyrod Taylor will make his third consecutive start for the Giants this weekend after he completed 18-of-29 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns in last Sunday's 14-7 home win over the Washington Commanders. Following Week 8, the Giants play at the Las Vegas Raiders on Nov. 5. 3-4

"Jones has been cleared to do scout team work since last week," Jones noted about the Giants signal-caller. "He's felt better, and a source said there's no perceptible difference in Jones at practice this week compared to earlier in the season, when he wasn't on the injury report."

Daboll declared earlier this week a healthy Jones will start over Taylor, but it remains unknown when that day will arrive.
