Last month, the Las Vegas Raiders kicked the tires on former wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, who is attempting to make an NFL comeback.
The Raiders certainly have the need for another receiver in their passing game. While tight end Brock Bowers is expected to lead the charge, there is not much behind him. 1,000-yard receiver Jakobi Meyers and third-year receiver Tre Tucker are also options, but the Raiders could struggle if injuries befall any of them.
While the idea of Renfrow makes sense in terms of need and nostalgia, it appears as though that is not expected to be the case.
The Athletic’s Vic Tafur discussed the idea of Renfrow coming back in a mailbag column, stating that a reunion between the two sides is currently unlikely.
“It doesn’t sound like the reunion is going to happen, though the Raiders could always revisit it after the draft,” Tafur responded.
Tafur’s answer is in line with what the Raiders have done this offseason, not heavily pursuing free agent receivers despite possible interest.
A fifth-round pick of the Raiders in 2019, Renfrow broke out in 2021, recording 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns en route to a Pro Bowl appearance and the team’s latest playoff berth. Unfortunately, a series of injuries and ineffectiveness ended his tenure with the team after the 2023 season. Renfrow was out of football during the 2024 season, but announced he was aiming for a comeback after being the subject of retirement rumors.
While Renfrow returning to the NFL would be an inspiring story, it appears as though the Raiders are keeping the matter at arm’s length.
There are some obvious reasons why Renfrow might not be desirable, largely due to taking a year off and the veteran turning 30 in December. However, Tafur’s response does suggest that the Raiders might be waiting to see how the draft pans out first before making any free agent decisions. If they are not satisfied with their receiver situation after the draft is complete, it is entirely possible that they decide to circle back to free agent options, including Renfrow.
Renfrow does not appear to be in consideration for a return to his former team, at least for the time being.
