The Pittsburgh Steelers are currently near the top of the National Football League when it comes to the league standings.
One of the reasons for the team's success has been quarterback play, which has been the best it has been in roughly six years. Ben Roethlisberger's elbow surgery set him back for the remainder of his career when it occured, and the Steelers seem to have a real shot at good quarterback play with Aaron Rodgers this season.
With that in mind, the Steelers do need to have plans in the case of injury or faltering quarterback play. As of right now, the Steelers are running with just two quarterbacks in Rodgers and Mason Rudolph. With Skylar Thompson and Will Howard both on Injured Reserve, both are able to be called up eventually.
That being said, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette believes that the Steelers will stick with their two quarterbacks for the time being and hold off on using one of their limited moves to elevate either of the two injured quarterbacks. In a chat on the Post Gazette site, Dulac addressed what he believes the Steelers' plan will be.
"I think they are going to keep their fingers crossed with two QBs until there is an injury for now," Dulac said.
The Steelers have been the benefit of some of the most consistent quarterback across the NFL in recent weeks. Despite not leading any particular stats in the passing game and even lagging behind in the bottom half for much of them, consistent quality play has allowed the Steelers to thrive. A low level of mistakes by the team in games other than their solitary loss to the Seattle Seahawks has allowed them to let their defense take the helm.
While Howard entered the preseason as a possible starter with Rodgers joining the team just before training camp, he will now have an extensive battle to make an NFL roster period. Thompson proved to be a viable third-string quarterback during the preseason games, so it is likely that the team would elevate him instead of the unproven Howard.
Rodgers has proven he still has much left in the tank, and has been able to hit the new star receiver in DK Metcalf. For right now, the Steelers have little to worry about at quarterback, as they have Rudolph who has proven to be a serviceable backup at the NFL level.
