The Dallas Cowboys trading Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 28 may be the most-discussed story on NFL pregame shows throughout Week 1.
It turns out one of Dallas' rivals attempted to land Parsons before the star pass-rusher ended up in Green Bay.
"The Philadelphia Eagles made a strong push to trade for Micah Parsons this summer," ESPN's Adam Schefter revealed on Thursday morning. "Philadelphia called Dallas to try to acquire Parsons, but the Cowboys had no interest in trading the two-time All-Pro pass rusher within their own division -- especially to the rival Eagles."
Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper noted that it's unclear what Eagles general manager Howie Roseman was willing to offer the Cowboys in return for Parsons. Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones ultimately received two first-round draft picks and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark from the Packers for Parsons' services.
Green Bay signed Parsons to a four-year, $188M contract that included $136M guaranteed as part of completing the trade. That deal made Parsons the new highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.
It's unknown if Roseman would've matched that contract offer.
Before Schefter shared his latest update, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN mentioned for a piece published on Thursday morning that the Carolina Panthers "made a call but did not formally offer a trade package to Dallas" for Parsons. Fowler also said that "multiple team execs believed that Parsons was intrigued by several teams in the process," most notably the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs.
"This was moot -- the Cowboys were focused on getting the best deal they could," Fowler continued. "And the Chiefs were never in it."
In March, the Eagles were linked with Cleveland Browns star pass-rusher Myles Garrett after he requested a trade. Garrett later signed a four-year, $160M contract extension that included $123.5M guaranteed to stay with Cleveland.
The reigning Super Bowl champions acquiring either Parsons or Garrett could have made them the favorites to get their hands on the Vince Lombardi Trophy this coming February. As of Thursday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had Philadelphia third among the betting favorites at +700 odds to win Super Bowl LX.
The Eagles host the Cowboys in the 2025 regular-season opener on Thursday night.
