Two years ago, Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love took the NFL by storm with an absolutely brilliant run during the second half of his debut campaign as the team’s starter, leading the Packers to the playoffs and a thrilling Wild Card Round win over the Dallas Cowboys.
As a result, expectations were sky high for Love and Green Bay’s offense heading into 2024, but Love ultimately did not live up to his billing.
The 26-year-old certainly wasn’t bad, but he wasn’t great, either, throwing for 3,389 yards, 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 63.1 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 96.7. The Packers made the playoffs, but fell to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round.
Now, entering his third full season under center for Green Bay, there is ample pressure on Love, and Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated feels it’s time for the former first-round pick to deliver.
“He’s on a top-of-market deal, so the onus is on him to start lifting his teammates rather than the other way around,” Breer wrote. “The roster’s still solid, but competitions at left tackle and receiver will help set the course for how far the team can go, and Love’s work through any bumps at those spots will be key.”
The Packers signed Love to a monster four-year, $220 million contract extension last year, essentially paying him big-time money for one impressive half of a season. Some expressed concern over the deal for that reason, and now, there seems to be some skittishness surrounding Love before 2025.
Green Bay drafted a couple of more wide receivers in Matthew Golden and Savion Williams this past April, giving the Packers an incredibly deep receiving corps that also includes Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks and Christian Watson, the latter of whom is recovering from a torn ACL.
On top of that, the Packers boast an impressive tight end duo of Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave.
Considering all of the weapons Love has it his disposal, there is no excuse for the Utah State product to not come through next season.
