It sounds like an Eagles rival is walking into a training camp nightmare
NFC Championship Game: Washington Commanders v Philadelphia Eagles Emilee Chinn/GettyImages

Six months ago, the Philadelphia Eagles' rivalry with the Washington Commanders seemed to be the most important battle in football. The two teams faced off in the NFC Championship Game, with the Eagles' juggernaut squad besting Jayden Daniels and the Commanders.

The arrow seemed to be pointed straight up for Washington. Now, one contract dispute could destroy their momentum before training camp even starts.

Terry McLaurin news is perfect for Eagles fans

Contract negotiations in the NFL are more public now than they ever have been. Players don't hesitate to use the media to their advantage, staging open discussions about frustrations with their deals. Recent examples include Trent Williams, Ja'Marr Chase, and Trey Hendrickson.

Now, Terry McLaurin has joined the list.

When speaking to the media earlier this week, McLaurin dropped a league-shaking quote about his current negotiations with the Commanders. He said, "without any progress in discussions it's kind of hard to see how I step on the field."

McLaurin is entering the final year of his current deal, on which he makes $22.7 million per year. He's in for a big payday. New York Jets receiver Garrett Wilson just signed a four-year, $130 million dollar deal.

McLaurin outpaced Wilson in both receiving yards and touchdowns in 2024 by a wide margin. Wilson's new deal is just another piece of leverage for McLaurin's agent. Sure, he's significantly older than Wilson, but he's playing at an elite level.

He's been voicing his frustrations for a while, but this just took things to a new level.

Now that McLaurin is talking about sitting out, things could get ugly for the Commanders. Entering training camp, they should be one of the more exciting teams in the NFL coming off their miraculous playoff run. Instead, all of the attention will be on a contract dispute that could have been resolved months ago.

If McLaurin truly does decide to hold out through the beginning of the season, his absence could derail Washington's playoff chances. Outside of McLaurin, the Commanders don't have many reliable receiving options. They would be trotting out Deebo Samuel and Zach Ertz as their top two pass catchers to start the year. That could be enough to keep them out of the postseason.

For the Philadelphia Eagles, this news couldn't be better. The Commanders are the main contender to dethrone the Eagles from atop the NFC East, and without their best receiver, Washington looks much weaker.

Division titles never come easy, but this development seems to bring the Eagles one step closer to winning another.

Once again, other NFL teams should take a page out of the Eagles' book: sign your star players to extensions early, and avoid the drama that so often starts the season on a sour note.
