'It's sad' - 5-time NFL Pro Bowler leaves no doubt how he feels about former Tennessee WR Jauan Jennings' contract demands

Former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jauan Jennings generated some headlines earlier this month by expressing his desire for a new contract with the San Fransisco 49ers.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Jennings, who is in the final season of a two-year extension worth $15.4 million that he signed last year, wants to be traded if the 49ers don't give him a new contract.

Despite the demand, Jennings isn't planning to hold out of training camp.

Jennings had a career season for the 49ers in 2024, totaling 77 receptions, 975 yards and six touchdowns in 15 games while also serving as a key run-blocker.

Five-time NFL Pro Bowl defensive back Richard Sherman, who was teammates with the former Vol in San Francisco in 2020 (Sherman's final season in the NFL), made it clear this week that he sides with Jennings.

“It does seem like this has just set a precedent for the 49ers because, every year, someone has done it," said Sherman on The Richard Sherman Podcast

"Whether it was when big Trent (Williams) wanted more money, he deserves it as the best tackle in football. He held out and did what he had to do for his money. Nicholas John Bosa, coming off Defensive Player of the Year, needed his money. He sat out and did what he had to do and got his money. Brandon Aiyuk last year.”

“It’s sad, not sad because of Jauan. Jauan deserves what he deserves,” continued Sherman. “He had almost 1,000 yards last season. 77 catches. Did a great job and does all the dirty work [in] run blocking and pass blocking. Whatever needs to be done, he’s willing to do. I think he would thrive if he was the No. 2 receiver for somebody and was getting targets the way he deserves.”

Jennings turned 28 earlier this month. His value will likely never be as a high as it is right now. This is his best chance to earn a lucrative longterm contract. And considering he's been vastly underpaid during the first several years of his NFL career, it goes without saying that Jennings more than deserves a big raise from the 49ers.
