Learning From Peanut Tillman

Rodriguez’s turnover skills aren’t accidental.

He revealed that he has spent time studying one of the greatest forced-fumble artists in NFL history, Charles “Peanut” Tillman.

Rodriguez even had the opportunity to meet Tillman and discuss technique firsthand.

In addition to studying Tillman, he also watches San Francisco linebacker Fred Warner, paying close attention to how elite linebackers attack the football without sacrificing sound tackling fundamentals.

Versatility Is Already Showing

Throughout training camp, Rodriguez has lined up in numerous roles.

He’s blitzed through the middle, rushed off the edge, dropped into zone coverage, and even covered running backs one-on-one.

Rather than focusing on mastering only one responsibility, Rodriguez said the Dolphins are intentionally exposing linebackers to every situation they may encounter during the season.

“The more reps we get on everything, the better we’ll be,” Rodriguez explained.

Feeding Off the Fans

Sunday’s practice was the first open practice of training camp, and Rodriguez admitted it brought a different level of excitement.

Although he quickly forgot fans were there once practice started, he said hearing the crowd during drills added plenty of energy.

“I’d rather them be here than not,” Rodriguez said. “They brought a lot of energy.”

Why Hafley’s Defense Fits Him

Rodriguez also discussed what makes Jeff Hafley’s defensive scheme so effective.

He explained that the defense is built around funneling ball carriers and quarterbacks into specific areas where defenders can swarm and create takeaways.

As he continues learning the system, Rodriguez believes the scheme naturally puts defenders in position to make plays.

“I think our scheme is unbelievable,” Rodriguez said. “It’s going to help us win games for sure.”

Smart Aggression Matters

While Rodriguez loves attacking the football, he also understands there are moments when securing the tackle is more important than attempting a strip.

He pointed to third-down situations as an example, explaining that if simply making the tackle forces a punt, there’s no reason to risk allowing extra yardage by going for the football.

That maturity and situational awareness are qualities coaches love to see from a rookie linebacker.

First NFL Purchase? A Mattress

Rodriguez closed his media session with one of the day’s lighter moments.

Asked what he bought with his first NFL paycheck, the rookie didn’t mention jewelry, a luxury vehicle, or expensive electronics.

Instead, he bought something he’d waited years to own.

A quality mattress.

Rodriguez shared that as a walk-on in college, he slept on the floor of his brother’s apartment before eventually sleeping on a thin college dorm mattress. After getting drafted, he fulfilled a long-standing promise to himself by purchasing a Tempur-Pedic mattress.

It’s another glimpse into the grounded mindset that’s quickly making him a fan favorite.
