The Jacksonville Jaguars and Cleveland Browns have struck another deal, this time swapping cornerbacks in a move that sends shockwaves through both locker rooms.

The Trade Details

The Jaguars are sending cornerback Tyson Campbell and a 2026 7th-round pick to Cleveland in exchange for cornerback Greg Newsome and a 2026 6th-round pick, according to ESPN sources. This marks the second significant trade between these franchises in less than six months, following their draft night deal where they swapped the No. 2 and No. 5 picks in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Campbell’s Costly Departure

The timing of this trade raises eyebrows given Campbell’s recent contract extension. Just three months ago, in July 2024, Jacksonville locked up the 25-year-old cornerback with a four-year, $76.5 million extension that included $53.4 million guaranteed. Now, that hefty investment is heading to Cleveland.

Campbell has been a key contributor for the 4-1 Jaguars this season, recording 22 tackles, one forced fumble and six pass deflections through five games. His departure leaves a significant void in Jacksonville’s secondary and raises questions about the team’s long-term defensive strategy.

Newsome Heads South

Greg Newsome, the 26th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, brings his own credentials to Jacksonville. The 24-year-old cornerback is in the final year of his rookie contract, earning $13.38 million this season. Despite playing for the struggling 1-4 Browns, Newsome has put together solid numbers with 18 tackles and three pass deflections.

For Newsome, the trade represents a fresh start with a winning team. The former Northwestern standout now joins a Jaguars squad that sits atop their division and appears poised for a playoff run.

Browns Continue Aggressive Trading

This deal continues Cleveland’s aggressive approach leading up to the November 4 trade deadline. The Browns have been wheeling and dealing, having already acquired left tackle Cam Robinson last week and trading quarterback Joe Flacco to division rival Cincinnati on Tuesday.

General manager Andrew Berry appears determined to shake up a roster that has underperformed expectations this season. The addition of Campbell gives Cleveland a proven cornerback with significant financial investment behind him, signaling the organization’s commitment to competing despite their slow start.

Impact on Both Teams

For Jacksonville, parting ways with Campbell so soon after his extension suggests either salary cap concerns or a fundamental shift in defensive philosophy. The Jaguars are betting that Newsome can fill the void while providing salary cap relief.

Cleveland, meanwhile, inherits Campbell’s substantial contract but gains a cornerback in his prime who has proven himself as a top-tier defender. The Browns hope this move, combined with their other recent acquisitions, can salvage what has been a disappointing season.

The trade represents more than just a player swap. It showcases how quickly NFL fortunes can change and how organizations must adapt when initial plans don’t unfold as expected.
