Jaguars rookie RB Travis Etienne out for season with foot injury

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie quarterback and first overall draft pick Trevor Lawrence will be without a familiar face and a former Clemson teammate for his debut NFL season.

ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport (h/t Nick Shook) reported Tuesday afternoon that Jacksonville rookie running back Travis Etienne will likely miss all of the upcoming campaign because of the Lisfranc injury to his left foot that he suffered in Monday's preseason loss at the New Orleans Saints. As a result, the Jags placed the RB on IR, and he'll miss the 2021 season.

It was originally hoped Etienne, drafted 25th overall, was merely slowed by a sprain, but additional tests confirmed the 22-year-old requires surgery to repair the issue.

Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer previously said he would feature Etienne at both running back and wide receiver during meaningful games this fall. Without Etienne on the depth chart, James Robinson should be cemented as Jacksonville's RB1 heading into the regular-season opener at the Houston Texans on Sept. 12.

Robinson recorded 1,070 rushing yards as an undrafted rookie last season.
