Jaguars’ Travis Hunter Reveals What He Thinks About His Doubters

Travis Hunter is heading into a rookie season in which he'll attempt to excel at two positions for the Jacksonville Jaguars, as he'll line up on offense and defense in games.

The No. 2 pick in this year's NFL Draft, Hunter arrives as a Heisman Trophy winner from the Colorado Buffaloes and has already demonstrated his abilities to play wide receiver and corner.

However, that was college, and the professional game will be more intense for the rookie. Last week, he participated in his first training camp, spending time playing and learning both positions with the Jaguars.

He's still getting acclimated to the team's system, connecting with Trevor Lawrence, and learning from various players on offense and defense. Following his first week of camp, he spoke to the media about his experience.

Hunter called it a "blessing" that he's able to play both positions, and at this point, he's focused on continuing to "do the work" he's assigned at camp. He said that it is a "little bit of extra work" on his plate compared to others, though.

When asked if things were more or less complicated than practicing both positions in college, Hunter called it "about the same." While he said he's feeling "super confident" in the offense he's learned, he also mentioned needing more time on the field to get comfortable with the defense.

The question of critics also arose for the rookie, and he provided a brilliant answer on how he views those who doubt or criticize his abilities.

During the media session, a reporter asked him what he found most challenging about his work that people often don't realize.

"Just the work that you try to put in and when they try to criticize it's like, 'I'm already doing all this extra work, you're gonna keep trying to tell me I can't do the same thing that I've been doing and showing you,' So, it's just that, a lot of people keep downplaying it, but I'm gonna just keep being quiet and go to work," Hunter said.

Asked if the doubters annoy him, Hunter replied that people criticizing him isn't something that affects what he does.

"I just smile. They don't know what to say, so they're just going to keep hating," the rookie said.

During training camp, he also mentioned that the mental aspect has been the most challenging for him so far, due to learning different playbooks each day and having to familiarize himself with various terms.

He'll have more time in the coming week to get up to speed before potentially playing in his first preseason games, likely for limited playing time. The Jaguars take the field on Saturday, August 9, to host the Pittsburgh Steelers in their first preseason matchup.
