The Cincinnati Bengals survived on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars 31-27 , but lost franchise quarterback Joe Burrow for up to three months with a reported turf toe injury suffered in the second quarter. Familiar face, Jake Browning was thrust into action and in his typical gunslinger fashion, went 21/32 for 241 yards passing with two touchdowns and three interceptions for a passer rating of 69.9. Browning led a masterful 15-play, 92-yard game-winning drive, capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by the man himself. The timetable for Burrow’s return is murky at best, so the team hopes Browning can revive shades of 2023 when he played in the final seven games of the season, throwing for 1936 yards with 12 touchdowns to seven interceptions for a completion percentage of 70.4%, keeping the Bengals in the playoff race until the very end.
The Bengals’ remaining schedule is brutal, including the next four games, with back-to-back road games against the Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos, followed by a home game against the Detroit Lions, and concluding with a trip to Lambeau Field to face the ferocious Green Bay Packers defense. If Burrow is out until mid-December, Browning has his work cut out for him to tread water in the case Burrow can return in 2025.
Browning has proven he can play well against good teams, so this should give the coaching staff some solace that he can perform well when it matters most. Look for running back Chase Brown to get more attempts, as the Bengals will likely lean on him more to help control the clock with a defense that is still finding its footing.
Browning’s game-winning drive was a thing of beauty and shows the faith the coaching staff and players have in him. He isn’t afraid to throw it up to his best players, and this was evident on a sweet throw and even better catch to Mitch Tinsley to tie the game at 17 early in the third quarter.

Zac Taylor also spread the ball around well, as Ja’Marr Chase went for 165 yards receiving on 14 receptions, and his running mate, Tee Higgins, had 56 yards on three receptions and a touchdown pass by Browning.
Life in the NFL is never easy, and it’s made even more difficult when you’re a backup quarterback. Browning knows the tale well and persevered on a long road just to be where he is. His mindset his top-notch, and he knows you have to be a little crazy when things aren’t exactly going your way. After the game, he was asked about his thoughts on the final drive, stating, “Just be delusional. I had thrown three picks, and still, we have a chance to win the game. You can’t be worried about a fourth one in that situation because you have a chance to win. The defense did a good job forcing the turnover on downs. Just keep being aggressive. The moment calls for it.”
With all of Bengaldom holding their breath for more news on Burrow, their current quarterback is just happy to have thoughts of grandeur to himself. It’s time for others to follow his lead.
