Jayden Daniels Injury Update: Commanders QB Facing Extended Absence

The Washington Commanders are facing another difficult injury situation involving quarterback Jayden Daniels, and the team will be without its star quarterback for at least Week 3.

Daniels suffered a dislocated left elbow during Sunday’s 37-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The injury occurred on the final play of the first half, when Daniels stumbled after taking a snap and landed awkwardly on his left arm.

The initial news provided some reason for optimism. X-rays did not show a fracture, but Daniels underwent additional imaging and is expected to consult with specialists before Washington determines the next steps in his recovery. Head coach Dan Quinn said Monday that there was not yet a timetable for Daniels’ return.

What is particularly concerning is that Daniels injured the same elbow last season. That previous injury caused him to miss time before he eventually returned, making this latest setback especially frustrating for the young quarterback and the Commanders.

Daniels was actually playing well before leaving Sunday’s game. He completed 11 of 17 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown while adding 69 rushing yards. He had helped Washington stay within striking distance of Dallas before the injury changed the game.

For now, Marcus Mariota will take over as Washington’s starting quarterback. Quinn confirmed that Mariota will start Sunday’s Week 3 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks while Daniels begins his recovery.

Mariota stepped in against Dallas and completed 11 of 16 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown, but the Commanders ultimately fell to 0-2.

Washington will now have to move forward without knowing exactly when Daniels will return. The Commanders are waiting for further medical evaluations before establishing a recovery timeline, leaving the team with a major question surrounding its season.

For Daniels, the immediate focus is recovery. For Washington, the challenge is keeping its season alive until its franchise quarterback is ready to return.
