Jaylon Johnson sends a message to Bears GM Ryan Poles

After returning a Brian Hoyer interception 39 yards for a touchdown with 5:36 left in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 30-12 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson found a camera in the end zone and sent a message to general manager Ryan Poles.

The 24-year-old cornerback, who’s in the final year of his rookie contract, took off his helmet, stared into the camera and made a “make it rain” gesture, signaling he wants a sizeable raise from his 2023 base salary of $2.99 million, whether it’s from the Bears or another team.

“You damn right (I was sending a message), 100%,” Johnson told reporters after the game. “I’ve been wanting to get to the table. At the end of the day, I know who I am, and I know I can play this game at a high level. I feel like I deserve to be paid like that. I’m taking that attitude for any team, for any and everybody in the NFL. So I mean if it’s with the Bears, then I’ll do that.”

Given recent reports that the Bears have made no progress toward signing Johnson to an extension, Poles would be wise to start making moves now.

The former second-round pick had two interceptions and two passes defensed against the Raiders on Sunday while limiting Jakobi Meyers to just two receptions on five targets for 16 yards and Davante Adams to zero receptions on one target.

Johnson is the highest-graded CB in the NFL, per Pro Football Focus

Of cornerbacks to play 150 or more coverage snaps, Johnson has allowed the second-fewest yards (111) and the third-fewest receptions (10), he has the lowest passer rating against (22), and he’s one of three players to allow a completion percentage of 45 or lower.
