Jerry Accused Of Throwing Cowboys Star 'Under the Bus'

FRISCO - There are two ways for Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs to look at the notable NFL Draft Weekend comments issued by team owner Jerry Jones.

One, Diggs - who has been bitten by the injury bug over the past two seasons with one knee injury in 2023 and another one in 2024 - can take the remarks as being an inspirational push from a boss who is paying him $20 million per year.

Or two, Diggs can assume, as some have, that Jerry is "throwing him under the bus.''

Such was the gravity of Trevon's injury that there is a thought that he might miss some time in 2025 - maybe the first half of the year - with Diggs likely opening the season on the PUP list.

Surely, with the nature of the injury, the Cowboys will likely be playing the cautious approach with their All-Pro corner. At the same time, they want him to work furiously to make his return.

And that's where Jerry having offered a little shot at the corner's previous injury rehab comes into play.

“We have a good idea," Jones said of the timetable. "He’s working hard. That’s very important because if he will be very good and diligent in his rehab process then he’ll get back quicker. And when he does get back, he’ll be sounder than if he has not worked as hard, he is more subject to injury.''

That's obvious. Anything else, Jerry?

"He’s learned that one time,'' Jones added. "I have a lot of hope that his actual rehab and experience from the time before is really helping him out. I think it is.”'

Oh my.

That's a subtle but powerful poke that confirms a long-standing rumor ... that Dallas was displeased with Diggs' commitment to rehab the last time around.

So, what about this time?

Diggs is making good progress, but the uncertainty of how healthy he will be in the early part of the season meant the Cowboys looked to the draft for cover with Shavon Revel Jr. being selected in the third round.

With Diggs, DaRon Bland, and now Revel. Jr, that is a decent trio of corners, but with Diggs the crown jewel of the secondary, getting him back on the field is crucial to Dallas' chances in 2025.

It will be a slow process, and one the Cowboys won't rush, given Diggs' injury history over the past two years. Maybe lessons have been learned and Trevon is now implementing them into his rehab in a bid to get back bigger and better.

The boss is hinting that he do so - no additional "bus-throwing'' should be required.
