In the immediate aftermath of a thrilling 40-40 tie with the Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones unsurprisingly wanted to talk about Micah Parsons.
Jones conducted a pregame interview with NBC and addressed reporters following the game. In both instances, the Cowboys’ longtime owner repeatedly defended his decision to trade Parsons to the Packers during the preseason; Parsons, who signed an extension with the Packers after failing to reach a new deal with Dallas, had three tackles and a sack on Sunday night.
On a night where Cowboys fans held signs supporting their former star pass-rusher, Jones happily explained why he paid quarterback Dak Prescott and never reached terms on a new deal with Parsons.
“It’s very simple: Dak was indispensable, in my mind… and Micah wasn’t,” Jones told reporters.
“It’s just numbers, it’s that easy,” Jones continued. “And that’s not personal at all. ... The numbers just weren’t there with Micah.”
Jones is no stranger to bold and bitter divorces, notably parting ways with Hall of Fame coach Jimmy Johnson and legendary running back Emmitt Smith. However, the Cowboys’ decision to trade Parsons, the 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year and a perennial All-Pro, remains one of the most controversial in recent league history.
Parsons tallied 52.5 sacks in Dallas with three top-3 finishes for Defensive Player of the Year. Although he hasn’t quite dominated just yet, Parsons already has 2.5 sacks in four games (three starts) for the Packers, who dropped to 2-1-1.
Dallas acquired defensive tackle Kenny Clark and two future first-round picks for the 26-year-old Parsons. Clark, who turns 30 on Oct. 4, has 12 tackles, one for a loss, and a sack.
FanDuel Sportsbook listed the Cowboys as -2.5 road favorites (-110, meaning a $100 bet would result in a $190.91 payout) over the New York Jets as of Monday morning. However, that line could significantly change after the 0-3 Jets play the Miami Dolphins on Monday night.
