Jerry Jones decided that the risk regarding Dak Prescott's future wasn't worth taking.
Prescott became the NFL's first player to average $60 million per year after inking a four-year, $240 million deal just ahead of Week 1. Following the drawn-out negotiations with star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, Prescott's deal seemed unlikely to get done. Still, the Dallas Cowboys secured their future at the quarterback position.
After the two sides came to an agreement, and two days removed from the impressive Week 1 victory over the Cleveland Browns, Jones spoke with 105.3 The Fan about Prescott.
“I think when I look at what Dak is: He’s a leader; he plays the position of ultimate leadership in sports, in my opinion, as the quarterback. You can put a huge value on measures of success that don’t reach a Super Bowl," Jones said.
I will say this: Any time that we’ve ever made players the highest-paid player – key players, such as Troy Aikman, the highest-paid player in the game – we’ve won Super Bowls.”
While Prescott has been unable to lead the Cowboys to the promised land thus far in his career, going 2-5 in postseason play, he's thrived in regular-season play.
The 31-year-old finished second in MVP voting last season and has gone 74-41 in the regular season as a starter in his career. He's fresh off a 2023 campaign in which he completed a career-best 69.5 percent of his passes with 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns and just nine interceptions.
