The Dallas Cowboys have quickly remodeled last year's leaky defense to start the offseason.
After allowing an NFL-worst 30.1 points per game in 2025, the Cowboys focused their attention on the defensive side. Jerry Jones made several additions, acquiring edge rusher Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers and signing safety Jalen Thompson to a three-year deal.
Speaking to reporters at Sunday's Grand Prix of Arlington, Jones said he couldn't think of a time he's ever revamped one unit as much during the modern free-agency era.
"I don't know since that has evolved and come about that we've ever had this kind of reshaping of an aspect of our team," Jones said.
The owner and general manager is optimistic about a 2026 turnaround with fresh faces coalescing alongside returning players looking to bounce back.
"What we’ve done on defense, and that plus what we have set up for the draft, plus what we have coming back from our veteran defensive players that really didn’t play that much last year -- injury issues, things like that -- gives us a lot of promise," Jones said. "And I'll tell you, when you have the challenges we had last year, there’s no place to go but up on the defensive side of the ball. Had we played a lick of defense last year, we would’ve had ourselves, I think, a real playoff run."
Dallas followed three consecutive 12-win seasons with seven victories in back-to-back years. They ranked 28th in total defense in 2024 and 30th last season, relinquishing a league-high 251.5 passing yards per game.
The Cowboys responded by making an uncharacteristic early free-agency splash, signing Thompson to a contract worth up to $33 million. He's started 15 games in each of the last three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.
Dallas also added cornerback Cobie Young and safety P.J. Locke to the secondary on one-year deals. Meanwhile, defensive tackle Otito Ogbonnia joins a group that acquired Kenny Clark in last year's massive Micah Parsons trade and Quinnen Williams in a midseason blockbuster.
Gary looks like the most significant offseason get for Jones. The former first-round pick followed a 2024 Pro Bowl campaign by registering 7.5 sacks for the second straight season.
The 28-year-old will look to help fill the Parsons void on a defense that tallied 35 sacks last season. Jones appears to believe the group is positioned to take a meaningful step forward next season.
