Jets' Garrett Wilson says 'people were happy' he blasted offense after loss to Patriots

New York Jets rookie wide receiver Garrett Wilson has defended what became viral comments he made after the 10-3 loss at the New England Patriots on Nov. 20.

According to Neil Best of Newsday, Wilson was asked after Sunday's dominant 31-10 home win over the Chicago Bears if his rant following the New England contest "landed in the right places" among those inside the "Gang Green" locker room.

"I definitely feel like it did," Wilson responded. "I didn’t mean any harm to anyone by saying it. And I don’t think anyone took it that way, luckily. Honestly, I feel like people were happy I said it. And to come back like this and play the way we did on offense this week, that’s what you want to do. This is what we should be doing."

Jets quarterback Zach Wilson completed only nine of 22 passes for 77 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions against the Patriots and then angered fans when he refused to say during his post-game press conference that he "let the defense down." Head coach Robert Saleh responded by benching Wilson in favor of backup Mike White, and White passed for 315 yards with three scores and no picks against Chicago.

Garrett Wilson caught two of those touchdown passes a week after he said that the offense was "sorry" against New England and had to "get better in the passing game if we wanna be at where we wanna be at."

"Obviously, there are some things I probably shouldn’t have said and I wish I could have back," Garrett Wilson added about the remarks he made following the Week 11 defeat. "But I’m a person and I’m emotional and we had just not played up to our standards."

Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith noted that "there’s been talk" one reason Saleh relegated Zach Wilson to scout team duties was because the second-year pro "had lost the locker room." Garrett Wilson didn't confirm that but strongly indicated he and his teammates would prefer to roll with White when the 7-4 Jets play at the 9-2 Minnesota Vikings this coming Sunday.
