It can be challenging to gauge a player's performance at this time of year, as OTAs begin with no contact or pad work, and for New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields, he has shown flashes.
Yes, we get it. The "underwear Olympics" is underway, and quarterbacks are throwing against air, and everyone looks like a Pro Bowler, but it is undoubtedly better to look good doing it than not.
For NFL Network's Brian Baldinger, he got a front row seat to a Jets OTA practice, in which he kept a close eye on Fields, and he came away rather impressed with the former first-round pick.
"He looked exceptionally fast," Baldinger said on NFL Insiders. "He was on the move quite a bit and threw well on the move. You saw him basically piercing the Jets' defense routinely. I thought he threw the ball well on the run. He took all the No. 1 repetitions with the starting offense. They used him in a variety of ways, but running the ball, he stood out."
Fields, as a runner, we know, can be a tough proposition for NFL defenses, and it appears that Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand will be looking to utilize Fields' dual-threat ability in 2025.
How that manifests itself is unknown, but Fields being on the move might be the best way for the offense to be productive.
Yes, it is OTAs, so we can take what we see with a grain of salt, but with Fields looking the part and having some lofty expectations of himself in what's quickly becoming a career-defining season, it does offer something positive to cling to.
But as we know, Fields won't truly be tested until the "real" stuff rolls around in Week 1.
