New York Jets starting quarterback Justin Fields suffered a concussion during the fourth quarter of Sunday's disappointing 30-10 home loss to the Buffalo Bills (2-0) after his head bounced off the MetLife Stadium turf as he took a sack.
While speaking with reporters on Monday, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn sounded like he is planning to have backup Tyrod Taylor serve as his temporary QB1 when the 0-2 Jets play at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 21. 1-0 Tampa Bay plays at the 0-1 Houston Texans on Monday night.
"It is always a tough one to really just evaluate until we get more information," Glenn said about Fields' setback, per Antwan Staley of the New York Daily News. "It is hard for me as a coach once you get to Friday and you haven’t had any reps. That is just something I believe in. I don’t want to put anything on that as far as where we are at with him until we get to that point."
The nature of the two-year contract Fields received from the Jets caused some to wonder in March if he could be only a couple of losses away from potentially losing the starting job to Taylor. Such takes surfaced before Fields completed 16-of-22 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown in the Jets' 34-32 Week 1 home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also rushed for 48 yards and two scores on 12 attempts in that defeat.
However, Fields and the rest of the Gang Green offense produced an outing to forget against the Bills. Before he went down with his concussion, he connected on 3-of-11 passes for 27 yards. Meanwhile, Taylor completed 7-of-11 pass attempts for 56 yards and a touchdown during his mop-up duty appearance after he spent the preseason recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery.
"Tyrod has been in this league for a number of years," Glenn said about his presumed Week 3 starter. "...He has been in this league a long time and it doesn’t take much for him to understand exactly what we are trying to do and what we are trying to get done."
Head injuries are often unpredictable, but history suggests Fields wasn't close to making a return to the practice field as of Monday afternoon. Thus, one can't help but wonder whether or not Taylor could spark a quarterback controversy if he guides the Jets to their first win of the season at Tampa Bay's Raymond James Stadium.
