Jets' Garrett Wilson sends Justin Fields warning to NFL after loss to Steelers

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields played better than many observers expected during the club's 34-32 Week 1 home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Fields and Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson were first teammates at Ohio State, so Wilson is quite familiar with what his QB1 can do when at his best. While speaking with reporters on Thursday, Wilson sent somewhat of a warning to the rest of the NFL regarding what the Jets offense can accomplish with Fields in the lineup.

Garrett Wilson shares vow about New York Jets offense

"He's not done yet," Wilson said about Fields, per Rich Cimini of ESPN. "We're not done. We're all excited for the opportunities we have to go show the world what we can do."

Fields' performances throughout the summer sparked concerns that he wasn't going to show any real improvement as a passer while playing on what is essentially a prove-it contract. However, the 26-year-old then completed 16-of-22 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown against what is, on paper, a menacing Pittsburgh defense. Fields rushed for 48 yards and two scores on 12 attempts, and he also took only one sack.

According to Pro Football Reference, Fields began Friday ranked 10th in the NFL among qualified players with a 79.4 adjusted QBR and fifth with a 119.1 passer rating.

Has Justin Fields found a home with the New York Jets?

The Chicago Bears made Fields the 11th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, but the Bears ultimately gave up on him after three campaigns. Pittsburgh then let Fields reach free agency earlier this year after he won four of six starts with the Steelers last season.

Wilson indicated that he and his teammates have warmly embraced Fields since the signal-caller signed with the Jets in March.

"This game rewards people that love it ... and he loves the game," Wilson added about Fields. "He plays it the right way and has the right mindset. Every time he takes the field, all the teammates, that stuff's contagious, right? So, when your quarterback's doing that, it's like you have no choice. I'm going to pop up after taking a hit or whatever it may be because you see him do it."

As of Friday morning, ESPN Bet had the Jets as 6.5-point underdogs for this Sunday's home game against the 1-0 Buffalo Bills. Buffalo earned a thrilling 41-40 win over the Baltimore Ravens this past Sunday night.
