Jets star Garrett Wilson sorry to fans about offense

New York Jets star wide receiver Garrett Wilson understands fans want more from an offense that routinely has betrayed the team since quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles in Week 1.

"I’m truly sorry about the product offensively we’ve put on the field this season up this point," Wilson said during an appearance on the ESPN New York "Bart and Hahn Show," per Andrew Battifarano of the New York Post. "And I know all the guys would say the same exact thing. The beautiful thing is we’ve got another opportunity."

Rodgers apologized to Wilson shortly after the future Hall of Famer went down on Sept. 11, possibly because the four-time NFL Most Valuable Player understood how things likely would play out.

ESPN stats show that the New York offense with Zach Wilson serving as Rodgers' replacement enters Week 11 ranked 29th in the NFL with an average of 283.1 yards per game. Meanwhile, the Jets are 30th with an average of 16.0 points per contest.

ESPN's Rich Cimini mentioned on Wednesday that the Jets have scored eight offensive touchdowns in nine games and none over the past 11 quarters of action. Garrett Wilson revealed during the radio segment that the players held a meeting Tuesday coming off this past Sunday's 16-12 loss at the Las Vegas Raiders that dropped the Jets to 4-5.

"It was just us," Garrett Wilson explained. "We got to make sure we’re all on the same page about where we’re at and how the hell we get out of this funk, man. That was really the message of it. When it comes from one of your teammates, it always hits different. It always resonates a little bit more."

For better or for worse, Jets head coach Robert Saleh is sticking with Zach Wilson under center for at least this coming Sunday's game at the 5-5 Buffalo Bills. As of late Wednesday morning, oddschecker listed the Jets as seven-point underdogs against the Bills.

"It doesn’t guarantee anything, we’ve still gotta go out there and do it but we’re taking the right steps and we’re turning over every stone because it matters to us," Garrett Wilson added about the players-only meeting. "This is been something that weighs heavy on all the players on offense."

Saleh may lose more than the locker room if Zach Wilson doesn't flip a figurative switch beginning this weekend. The idea of Rodgers possibly returning to the lineup next month makes less sense with each defeat the Jets endure, so it's not a stretch to say that "now-or-never" time begins for Zach Wilson and company at Buffalo's Highmark Stadium.
