Former Jets QB shares advice for Garrett Wilson amid frustrations

Former New York Jets quarterback, one-time NFL Most Valuable Player and current "The NFL Today" analyst Boomer Esiason offered some advice for Jets star wide receiver Garrett Wilson after Wilson made it known multiple times he's frustrated over the team's offensive woes.

"I would just button it up, man," Esiason said while speaking about Wilson during Tuesday's edition of the WFAN "Boomer and Gio" program, per Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "You dropped a key pass [in the 16-12 loss at the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday night]. You threw a wide-open reverse pass into the stands. Just button up and just do your job, man. That’s all it is. It’s that simple. Just like the great Bill Belichick says all the time, 'just do your job.'"

Wilson acknowledged ahead of the Raiders game that "as a team, as individuals, we want to be great, and that’s where you see the frustration come from." After the Jets failed to find the end zone in the four-point defeat at Allegiant Stadium, a visibly upset Wilson told reporters he was "tired of this."

Such comments are nothing new from Wilson, as the 23-year-old openly criticized the team's passing attack last November. Esiason seemingly would like the second-year pro to keep certain opinions to himself as the 4-5 Jets pursue a playoff berth.

"You don’t have to be the spokesperson for the team," Esiason continued. "You don’t have to be telling everybody how frustrated you are, because the entire building is frustrated. The entire offense is frustrated."

Many in the NFL community ripped Jets quarterback Zach Wilson after he initially failed to take accountability following an awful performance in a loss to the New England Patriots last season. Esiason reminded Garrett Wilson on Tuesday that the 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year didn't play a flawless game against the Raiders.

"When there were two plays that needed to be made, you didn’t make them," Esiason added. "So before you start b------- and complaining about everybody else, he’s a part of that. He needs to say that. 'I need to make the catch, I need to make the pass.'"

Jets head coach Robert Saleh confirmed Monday that Zach Wilson will start at the 5-5 Buffalo Bills this coming Sunday. Both Saleh and Zach will need Garrett Wilson to be fully focused on the task at hand for Gang Green's offense to show signs of life at Highmark Stadium ahead of Thanksgiving.
