The New York Jets probably shouldn't count on D.J. Reed returning next year.
New York's disastrous season continued with Sunday's 40-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills. The Jets, who fell to 4-12, will miss the playoffs for the 14th straight season.
Reed has witnessed three of those campaigns. The cornerback has started 45 games for Gang Green since joining them after two years with the Seattle Seahawks.
According to Go Long's Tyler Dunne, Reed gave a candid answer about his future plans.
"I'm ready to go to free agency, bro," Reed said. "I'm ready to see what's next for me."
The Jets entered the 2024 season with high hopes behind a returning Aaron Rodgers. However, they rank 24th in total offense and scoring.
"I was going to have 10 picks," Reed said of his expectations entering the season. "We were going to be elite. I thought that we'd be up in the score late in games and teams would have to throw the ball and I'm going to make plays on the ball."
Despite allowing the sixth-fewest total yards, the Jets rank 22nd in scoring defense following Sunday's blowout loss.
"We gotta get sh*t going -- on offense, on special teams," Reed said after the game, per ESPN's Rich Cimini. "You keep having our defense go out there. Eventually, they're going to do something good. We're playing a high-powered offense. So yes, defense, we need to be better, but we gotta play complementary football."
With one game remaining, Reed is 10 interceptions shy of his 10-pick goal. He's tallied 59 tackles, 10 pass breakups, and a sack while allowing an 82.1 passer rating in coverage, per Pro Football Reference.
During the season, Reed saw the Jets fire head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas. More drama followed when The Athletic reported on the organization's dysfunction. Woody Johnson allegedly shut down trade talks over a player's Madden rating, and his teenage sons criticized players in their locker room.
Reed can conclude his Jets career after they play the Miami Dolphins in Week 18.
