Jets Suggested to Replace Justin Fields With Controversial Backup Quarterback

We can say whatever we want about what’s quickly becoming a disastrous, failed experiment, but it’s hard to fault the New York Jets for gambling on veteran quarterback and ex-Ohio State star Justin Fields this past offseason.

However, any hopes about the 26-year-old Fields solving the Jets’ decades-long quest for a franchise quarterback all but evaporated in Sunday’s 13-11 loss to the Denver Broncos. Although Fields has completed 65% of his passes without an interception in 123 attempts, the winless Jets recorded -10 net passing yards on Sunday in London.

Defenses have sacked Fields on 13.4% of his dropbacks, and he’s taken 14 sacks in the Jets’ last two games. Fields has thrown only four touchdowns in five starts, and he ranks 29th out of 33 qualified passers in ESPN’s Total QBR metric.

New York sports radio host and devoted Jets fan Evan Roberts has seen enough. However, rather than have the Jets turn to backup Tyrod Taylor, Roberts has another option in mind: Cleveland Browns rookie fifth-round pick Shedeur Sanders.

“Someone tell me why that’s a bad idea,” Roberts asked co-host and longtime New York Giants running back Tiki Barber on Monday. “And I don’t wanna hear about, ‘It’s a circus.’ It’s a circus? What’s this? What the hell is this that we’re watching? ... Bad, crappy football is a circus.”

Sanders, a fifth-round pick in April’s draft, hasn’t played a snap yet. He began the season as Cleveland’s third-string quarterback but moved to the backup role following last week’s Joe Flacco trade.

“I see a talent, a guy I believed — I think we all talked about him as a guy that could at least be a serviceable starting quarterback in the NFL,” Roberts said on WFAN. “They are not giving him a chance in Cleveland.”

Former Pro Bowl Running Back Tiki Barber Is Against a Shedeur Sanders-Jets Trade

Roberts proposed that the Jets trade a fifth-round pick for Sanders, the No. 144 pick last April. Barber, in turn, questioned how things would improve if the “brash” Sanders arrived, especially given the various issues on both sides. Sanders is arguably the league’s most discussed backup quarterback since Colin Kaepernick, and there is no indication the Browns will even consider playing him unless fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel gets hurt.

“What if he’s good?” Roberts countered.

“It doesn’t matter if he’s good,” Barber responded, adding, “The only thing that will matter is if he wins.”

Barber clarified that while he doesn’t believe a trade sending Sanders to the Jets is a bad idea, he does think it’s “very risky.” Roberts replied by calling the Jets an “unwatchable mess,” and we’re sure that the 61,155 fans who filled London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would agree.

Could the Jets Realistically Trade for Shedeur Sanders?

As Roberts noted, Sanders likely wouldn’t cost the Jets too much, and he won’t hurt their cap situation, either. The ex-Colorado star signed a standard four-year rookie contract, and he’d be an inexpensive option with three seasons of team control remaining.

However, it’s worth mentioning that there have been no credible reports regarding a potential Sanders trade ahead of the Nov. 4 deadline. We’re personally skeptical that the Browns will part ways with Sanders before the offseason, barring a drastic change of plans.

It remains unclear whether the Browns will add another quarterback ahead of Sunday’s showdown with the Miami Dolphins. Cleveland only has Gabriel and Sanders on the 53-man roster, and former New England Patriots fourth-round pick Bailey Zappe is on the Browns’ practice squad.

The Jets also have three quarterbacks in the organization; Fields and Taylor are on the active roster, and ex-Missouri starter Brady Cook is their practice squad quarterback. Fields is expected to start against the 3-3 Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
