J.J. McCarthy comments about Kyler Murray seen as 'plea for help' amid Vikings' QB competition

2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy raised eyebrows when he recently said that having free-agency signing Kyler Murray on the Minnesota Vikings' roster this spring is "like the same feeling when you're in high school, and there's another person on the other side of the room."

Some NFL executives noticed McCarthy's comments and believe he could soon ask for a fresh start elsewhere.

Does J.J. McCarthy want out of Minnesota after Kyler Murray move?

"McCarthy, in his first public comments since the team brought in former first-overall pick Kyler Murray to essentially replace him as starting quarterback, issued what rival front offices deemed a plea for help," NFL insider Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom US shared on Thursday.

Specifically, one unnamed general manager told La Canfora that he believes McCarthy "wants out" of Minnesota.

"I think he’s wanted out of there since they signed Murray," the executive continued. "Those personalities are not going to be a good fit."

La Canfora echoed Alec Lewis of The Athletic and others who have said that the odds "feel dramatically tilted in Murray’s direction" regarding what McCarthy referred to earlier this week as "a true competition" for the Vikings' QB1 job.

While some suggested back in March that McCarthy ultimately could request a trade following the team's signing of Murray, La Canfora mentioned that "Minnesota would likely not fetch much for" the 23-year-old who didn't look like an elite signal-caller across the first 10 regular-season starts of his career.

Poor play isn't the only reason the Vikings may sit J.J. McCarthy in favor of Kyler Murray

A previous report suggested that McCarthy failed to fully grasp "some of the more elemental aspects of being the face of a franchise" in 2025 after he spent his entire rookie season recovering from a full meniscus repair. La Canfora noted that McCarthy "had some issues with his maturity and demeanor behind the scenes, according to league sources, which went into an obvious plan to upgrade on him if possible this offseason."

McCarthy's comments from this week could lead one to believe that he hasn't fully corrected his "maturity and demeanor behind the scenes." Add in that it seems as if Murray has impressed during springtime workouts, and it may be fair to wonder if McCarthy's days with the team that drafted him are numbered.
