The Dallas Cowboys face the Baltimore Ravens at AT&T Stadium on Saturday night in coach Brian Schottenheimer's second preseason game, with the franchise looking to build on what was a good training camp in Oxnard, and a so-so first preseason outing in last week' loss at the Rams.
With every game comes the chance for the coaching staff to evaluate players pushing for roster spots and even those on the roster bubble with their football lives hanging by a thread.
For me, there will be a couple of things to keep a watchful eye on for Schottenheimer's offense against Baltimore.
Let's get to it.
1 - Joe Milton's progression
Can Joe settle into the game a little quicker, run Schottenheimer's offense, and not press the power button on every throw? Instead, can he operate the offense efficiently, use touch on his passes, and "drive the car" against the Ravens?
Yes, we know he can rocket a football 90 yards, but we don't want to see that. Can he be accurate, play on time, and deliver catchable passes to his receivers so they can make a play?
There is plenty to like about Joe, but he is a raw prospect.
Let's see some progression from Milton in terms of "playing" the quarterback position. Yes, the physical traits are obvious, but let's see his quarterback traits flourish.
2 - Tyler Booker's first NFL outing/ run game standouts
I, like many other watchers of the first preseason game, was rather shocked that first-round pick Booker didn't suit up, but it was part of Schottenheimer's plan. We will get to see Booker in action against the Ravens, and it will be our first time seeing him in live game action.
"I make guys not love football anymore" was Tyler's now-famous quote after the draft. Let's see if he can back it up. His training camp performance suggests so, but here's to what we hope will be a solid debut for Booker.
As for the run game, Deuce Vaughn, Jaydon Blue (who will test out his bruised heel in a game-time decision), Phil Mafah, Malik Davis, and Hunter Luepke stand to be the ones with the most to gain/lose from the game, and who takes their chance could ultimately prove decisive when the Cowboys have to cut down their roster in the coming weeks.
3 - Receiver depth chart log jam
Jonathan Mingo, Jalen Brooks, Traeshon Holden, Ryan Flournoy, and Jalen Cropper will all get another chance to try and improve their chances of working their way up the depth chart and potentially onto the 53-man roster.
Holden, I am particularly interested to see him get more snaps because after his two catches for 42 yards against the Rams, he deserves it. So too does Flournoy, who got open with ease at SoFi.
No one stepped up enough against Los Angeles to solidify their roster spot, but who might take their chance against Baltimore?
