Four years removed from the offensive email scandal that led to his departure from the Raiders, Jon Gruden has slowly been creeping back into NFL circles.
The Super Bowl-winning head coach was reportedly in attendance at Ravens OTAs this week where he observed the team's workouts on Thursday and Friday — something Baltimore's John Harbaugh defended via the team's official website.
"He loves football, he's a great football coach, great football mind," Harbaugh said. "He studied our team, gave us some insight — players, coaches, schemes, all of it. We didn't give him the playbook, we didn't give him a script either. You can only go so far. He studied us."
"Basically, the message was, 'If I was game planning against you on defense, what would I do, how would I attack you?'" the 2019 Coach of the Year continued. "He didn't just stop there. He watched our offensive guys. He had something for each player. Very, very detailed."
It's not clear what this means for Gruden in terms of a potential full-on return to coaching. But the 62-year-old has made it clear that he still hopes to one day wear the headset again.
"I miss it," Gruden admitted on the "Fitz & Whit" podcast earlier this year. "I'm scratching that itch, though, right here — I've had more people come in here in the past few weeks than probably any coach in the league. College guys, NFL guys. I'm studying every day, scratching that itch."
"I would like one more chance to do it because I thought we had that team on the right trajectory. We were 3-0, we beat three straight playoff teams, and I thought we had a good young team and it really crushes me to see how everybody went different directions real fast," he added.
"So deep down I'm kind of hoping someday I get a chance, but I'm definitely not counting on anything. So I've reinvented myself."
