The Packers escaped Sunday night’s game against the Cowboys with a 40-40 tie, but quarterback Jordan Love very nearly didn’t even allow kicker Brandon McManus the chance to attempt the chip shot field goal that clinched the draw.

On third down with :20 remaining, rather than getting up to the line of scrimmage to spike the football and stop the clock so McManus would have time to get onto the field to set up for the kick, or quickly rush to the line to hike the ball before calling a play in the end zone, Love calmly and slowly set the Packers’ offense before rifling a pass into the end zone that fell incomplete with just one second remaining on the clock.

Already well within field goal range, and with time to execute one shot at the end zone, Love very nearly allowed time to expire.

Love, though, had a clear explanation for what went down in the consequential moment.

“Obviously a moving clock situation, no timeouts left, we got to get a call in,” Love said. “We had a good call on; we just didn’t execute it. I don’t think everyone was on the same page on what needed to happen. … It’s just one of those situations that took too long. We were wasting too much time out there.”

Fortunately, Love got the play in and snapped with precisely enough time left on the clock to allow the field goal try, or else the Packers would have entered the bye week feeling significantly differently than they do now, at 2-1-1.
