Josh McDaniels Highlights Drake Maye's Rare Ability

While Drake Maye has arguably been the worst starting quarterback in the NFL to start the season, his offensive coordinator has the utmost trust that he can bounce back and right the ship.

During his weekly press conference, Josh McDaniels spoke on his third-year quarterback’s ability to maintain his confidence, overcome his mistakes, and move on to the next play.

“His demeanor, his countenance, his facial expressions, his ability to interject things in meetings has not changed, and I love that about the kid,” said McDaniels.

“I think he’s blessed in that regard because there’s people that sometimes let those things weigh on them.”

While these words weren’t from Maye himself, coming from New England’s offensive coordinator, someone who sees him daily, should give New Englanders a sigh of relief that the bad plays to start the season haven’t gotten to the young quarterback’s head.

Through three games, Maye has put plenty of bad plays on tape, and it’s evident in his overall lack of production. Maye ranks in the bottom third in total yards, touchdowns, and QBR. He also leads the league with six interceptions.

Maye’s Chance at Redemption

Sunday’s game against the Bills represents a clean slate for Drake Maye. And while he wants to start the game fast and take deep shots down the field, it’s time for him to slow down and take the looks that the defense gives him.

He will undoubtedly see cover six due to his well-documented struggles against that particular coverage. But he will also face a 27th-ranked pass defense that surrenders 254 yards/game, has given up seven passing touchdowns, and may be without outside cornerback Christian Benford.

With the praise of his offensive coordinator, this week’s matchup against Buffalo’s poor pass defense could be the perfect opportunity for Maye to correct his mistakes through the first few weeks and lead the Pats to a victory in Orchard Park.
