Justin Fields' performance was hard to ignore as he made his New York Jets debut on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers at MetLife Stadium.
The 26-year-old quarterback signed a two-year, $40 million deal to join the Jets after going 4-2 as a starter for Pittsburgh last season.
Drafted No. 11 overall by the Chicago Bears in 2021, Fields accrued a 10-28 record as a starter in the first three seasons of his NFL career in Chicago.
After the change of scenery, Fields wasted no time in Week 1 showing the dual-threat potential that made him such a coveted player in the past.
At halftime against the Steelers, he was 9-for-11 for 134 yards with a 33-yard touchdown to former Ohio State Buckeyes teammate Garrett Wilson.

He also ran for two touchdowns, including a go-ahead score in the fourth quarter. Pittsburgh went on to squeak out a 34-32 victory. Still, Fields' dynamic performance left a strong impression on legendary Jets quarterback Joe Namath.
"I really like what I see of our team so far, both offensively and defensively," Namath wrote on X. "Justin Fields has brought something special to the offense - mobility! He’s turned some negative plays into positive ones with his ability to run."

Namath, 82, led the Jets to their only NFL championship in 1969 by beating the Baltimore Colts 16-7 in Super Bowl III.
The Pro Football Hall of Famer played 12 seasons in New York, accumulating 27,057 yards and 170 touchdowns through the air.
"Broadway Joe" was not an expert on mobility — he ran for 140 yards during his entire career — but Fields' ability to keep the Steelers defense off-balance was evident for everyone to see in Week 1. Fields finished 16-of-22 passing for 218 yards and the touchdown to Wilson. He added 48 yards and the two scores on the ground.
It marked a drastic shift from having Aaron Rodgers in the backfield last season. He traded places with Fields and returned to New York as the Steelers' starter on Sunday.
