The Kansas City Chiefs have a new quarterback heading into the 2026 season. That quarterback is Justin Fields, who comes over from the New York Jets. While Fields isn’t expected to start every game since Patrick Mahomes has that role, Fields is taking on the task of learning as much as he can.
“I wanted to come here because of the [Chiefs’] culture, because of Pat and to learn from him and Coach [Andy] Reid,” Fields said Tuesday, per ESPN. “Just the winning, to be honest.
“We of course knew of each other, but we really didn’t communicate before coming here. I’m excited to learn from [Mahomes]. I’m already kind of picking his brain a little bit and just observing how he goes about things in the meeting rooms, field and stuff like that. I’m excited, of course, to work with Coach Reid and [offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy] and all the guys on offense.”
Fields came to Kansas City in a trade with the Jets. He spent just one season in New York, where he struggled to lead a sluggish Jets offense. New York won just three games during the 2025 campaign.
Fields also spent time with the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers before playing with the Jets.
Fields has impressed his coaches so far in Kansas City. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is putting a lot on Fields’ shoulders, since Mahomes is currently recovering from an ACL injury.
“I appreciate Justin and the way he has gone about everything so far,” Reid said Monday. “He’s been great with everything. He’s a legitimate quarterback, a starting quarterback in the NFL, and we’re lucky enough to have him here. If that’s the role that he plays early in the season, we have full confidence that he can do a great job with that.”
Chiefs fans hope that Fields can help the team this upcoming season. Kansas City missed the NFL Playoffs in 2025, following a disappointing 6-11 campaign.
