Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard has made his confidence in rookie defensive back Keith Abney clear, calling him one of the smartest young players he has coached.
Sheppard’s praise reflects how quickly Abney has adapted beyond his natural cornerback position. Detroit has worked the fifth-round pick at outside corner, nickel and safety.
“He did his job. There’s so much more meat left on that bone,” Sheppard said of Abney’s performance, highlighting the rookie’s execution and room to improve.

Shepp praised his performance at safety vs. AZ, a position he hadn’t played since middle school.
“He did his job.”
Abney’s opportunity grew during Detroit’s Week 5 game against the Arizona Cardinals. Making his first career start at safety, he played 59 defensive snaps, recorded six tackles and intercepted quarterback Jacoby Brissett. The Lions won 45-21 before their Week 6 bye.
The adjustment was significant because Abney had primarily played outside cornerback at Arizona State. Detroit saw the intelligence and physicality to move him inside to nickel, then expanded his responsibilities to safety as injuries affected the depth chart.
His versatility could matter Sunday, when the Lions host the Green Bay Packers. Detroit enters the NFC North matchup at 3-2, while Green Bay is 4-2 after beating the Dallas Cowboys. The result could shape the division race.
Head coach Dan Campbell and Sheppard will need the secondary to communicate and tackle well against a Packers offense capable of testing multiple coverage areas. Abney’s ability to line up at different spots gives Detroit flexibility, but his role will depend on execution. That flexibility could prove valuable in this critical divisional matchup.
Sheppard’s assessment is encouraging, not a declaration that the rookie has finished developing. Abney has shown he can handle a difficult assignment, and the Lions will hope that progress continues against a divisional rival.
