One of the biggest strengths for the Los Angeles Chargers last season was their pass rush, but with multiple members of the defensive line headed for free agency it was a major area of concern.
Franchise centerpieces Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack were both headed for the open market and while the former signed with the Buffalo Bills, the Chargers did everything in their power to retain Mack.
Los Angeles knew they couldn’t afford to lose both players, so they gave the former Chicago Bears star a one-year deal worth nearly $20 million.
Over three months removed from the signing, Mack has revealed his though process behind free agency and the decision to remain in LA.
The former Las Vegas Raiders draft pick explained that money was not a big part of his decision at all, rather it was the fit on the field and opportunity to win.
The Chargers do not have a very rich history of winning, but when you look closely at this iteration of the team, a championship infrastructure is in place.
A key characteristic of many championship teams is a great organization and while Los Angeles does have an owner with a history of meddling, they also have a stable general manager and head coach combination.
Another imperative piece of building a super bowl winner is an elite quarterback and Justin Herbert has experienced his fair share of struggles, but the consensus is that he is one of the five most talented players at the position.
An improvement in some intangible categories could be what elevates Herbert from just a good quarterback to a great one.
With all these aspects, it is easy to see why Mack thinks he has a good chance to win a super bowl in Los Angeles.
Their future is bright, but before they get championship aspirations, they must help Herbert get the monkey off his back by winning his first career playoff game.
