Las Vegas Raiders sign underrated Notre Dame standout after being waived the previous day
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

It has been a turbulent 24 hours for former Notre Dame and Oklahoma State defensive back Thomas Harper, who was waived by the Los Angeles Chargers. He received some good news today when the Las Vegas Raiders made a waiver claim for the talented defender.

Harper began his career with the Oklahoma State Cowboys, where he was a valuable member of the defense at both nickel and safety. In 45 games played for the team, Harper recorded 93 total tackles, five tackles for loss, two interceptions, and six pass breakups. He also recorded a forced fumble, and recovered another for the Cowboys.

In his lone season in South Bend, Harper started every game he played at nickel back. It’s a role that he was very underrated in, hardly ever talked about, which is a massive compliment in that role. In 11 games with the Fighting Irish, Harper recorded 39 total tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks, and three pass breakups.

It wasn’t a massive surprise that Harper went undrafted due to lack of buzz around the league, and some limitations based on his size. He tested phenomenally well during his pro day, which allowed him to generate a lot of interest after the 2024 NFL Draft.

Harper now enters a Raiders defensive back room that does appear to have opportunities to find a role down the road. They have Nate Hobbs in the nickel, who is one of the best in the NFL but the safety spot is much less solidified, particularly the depth.
