As the Dallas Cowboys enter their second week of training camp in Oxnard, California, there are already a couple of unfortunate injury updates.
During the Cowboys' first padded practice of the year, a couple of players suffered injuries in positions in which competition is at its highest: OG Rob Jones (neck) and TE Brevyn Spann-Ford (ankle). It's always unfortunate for practice injuries to occur, but in the NFL, the page turns quickly.
As a result, we're looking at players that could capitalize on the unfortunate news surrounding their teammates. I'm dividing the post by the two players whose injuries could cause a shake up on the depth chart.
Jones, who was signed in free agency in March, was standing out as one of the top depth pieces across the offensive line in training camp. Not only was he competing with first-round rookie Tyler Booker—who's been expected to start since April—but before his injury, he was spending extra time mentoring the young guard.
With a broken bone in his neck, Jones is expected to miss two to three months, according to early reports. That puts Brock Hoffman and T.J. Bass in a position for extra reps.
Both players have been rotating at guard with Hoffman working some snaps at center, too. Thanks to his versatility, Hoffman already looked like a 53-man roster lock, but Bass' chances were up in the air. Though unfortunate, Jones' injury gives the young player a chance to show off his talent to a new offensive line coaching staff. Brian Schottenheimer also mentioned Saahdiq Charles and Asim Richards as part of the team's depth at right guard.
Spann-Ford suffered an ankle sprain expected to knock him out for a few days. The injury happened in a run play in which he acted as a backside pulling blocker. An MRI will determine his availability moving forward, but even if he misses a handful of practices, his absence shakes up things at tight end.
Spann-Ford seemed to be competing with former second-round draft pick Luke Schoonmaker for the TE2 role. But Spann-Ford not taking the field not only means more snaps for Schoonmaker but also the likes of John Stephens, Princeton Fant, and UDFA rookies Tyler Neville and Rivaldo Fairweather.
Stephens stands out as he needs all the chances he can get, as this is a contract year for him. He's made some impressive catches at camp and has been a standout in previous years as well. As long as he stays healthy, he has a chance at making the 53-man roster.
