Lions DC throws shade with Terrion Arnold mic drop

The Detroit Lions have some serious secondary issues headed into the 2026 season. Detroit released cornerback Terrion Arnold back in June after he was arrested on kidnapping and robbery charges. Arnold’s action may still be an open wound for one of Detroit’s defensive coaches.

Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard was asked about the loss of Arnold during a recent interview. Sheppard responded with a bold statement about what that loss means for Detroit’s defense.

“Listen, I’m not going to say it was a setback so to say because to me honestly, that’s disrespectful to the guys that are still in this locker room,” Sheppard told reporters on Monday. “What I’ll say is Terrion Arnold had No.1 cornerback potential, but it was still untapped. You know what I mean? I’ll leave it at that.”

Sheppard did not say anything too extreme with his comments. But reading between the lines, there appears to be no love lost between Sheppard and Arnold.

Sheppard said a lot more than Dan Campbell did about the Arnold situation. The Lions head coach only noted that “it’s unfortunate” and made it clear that Detroit “made the move we felt was best for us.”

The secondary has been Detroit’s biggest issue on defense for years now. Everything that transpired with Arnold only made the situation that much worse.

The Lions now have D.J. Reed and a fascinating mixture of role players behind him on the depth chart. Newcomer Roger McCreary, veteran, Rock Ya-Sin, Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Nick Whiteside, and rookie Keith Abney II should all be involved in 2026. That depth chart would look a lot better with Arnold included next to Reed.

Detroit also expects to be without Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph to start the 2026 season. The Lions will already be testing their secondary depth, so losing Arnold makes that situation worse.

It will be fascinating to see who wins the starting job opposite Reed throughout the rest of training camp.
