Jared Goff has been inconsistent through his first two games with the Detroit Lions. However, head coach Dan Campbell says the veteran quarterback is playing with a high level of confidence.
"He really has after the last two weeks," Campbell said, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. "And look, you can't excuse the turnovers, but if you take those away, he would've given us a chance to win [on Monday]. He made some pretty dang good throws and he improvised a little bit, which you didn't necessarily always see that at the Rams. So that was encouraging to us."
Goff looked great during the first half of Monday's 35-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers, completing 13-of-16 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns. His issues didn't begin until the second half.
The 26-year-old lost one of his two fumbles and threw an interception to De'Vondre Campbell. He finished the game 26-of-36 passing for 246 yards, two touchdowns and a pick.
Goff, the 2016 first-overall pick, as completed 68.8% of his passes this season for 584 yards and five touchdowns against two interceptions. He's averaging 6.3 yards per attempt, the lowest since his rookie campaign.
If Goff is playing at a "high level of confidence," as Campbell says, he's certainly not confident enough to throw the deep ball. His longest completed pass this season went for 46 yards, the lowest of his career thus far.
The Los Angeles Rams traded Goff partially because of his inconsistencies. If he can't work things out in Detroit, he could be on his way out.
However, it's a long season, and Goff has plenty of time to prove he's still capable of being a starting quarterback. So, let's wait and see what happens.
